BANGALORE: Semicon Park Pvt. Ltd. today announced that its one-stop, post design and post-fab, service facility for semiconductor companies, in Bangalore is operational.

Spread over 5 acres, the one of its kind facility would have 350000 sq. ft. of built-up area and would house a testing house, board manufacturer, packaging service provider and a system-level programming company among others, according to the press release.

Completely inter-networked to function as a seamless single facility housing multiple specialized companies in the supply chain post GDS II and pre-fab, the facility would see a cumulative investment of over Rs 65 crores over the next three years, stated the press release.

Set up with initial investments to the tune of Rs 35 crores, the management expects to tap outside investors for the next level of investments.

The facility has already received significant traction with Tessolve, one of the few engineering focused test houses moving into the facility and a board level manufacturer signed to move in by end 2005 or early 2006.

Announcing the project, Johny Mathew, Lead Promoter and CEO of Semicon Park Pvt. Ltd., said,” The growth of the Indian semiconductor industry has been primarily in the design and other related services which is entirely understandable considering the country's inherent cost/talent advantage. However, limiting to being a design services hub has a strategic disadvantage as it does not offer a strong competitive barrier and constrains the total value that we can provide. Further, to catalyze larger investments in manufacturing and related areas, India needs to offer a much more comprehensive ecosystem which is only being realized now.”

“Offering an industry perspective, Rajendra Kumar Khare, Chairman, ISA, said, "The launch of the new service facility, the setting up of full-fledged testing facility and other happenings in the recent past clearly mark a concrete move towards creating a complete ecosystem for the Indian semiconductor industry to move to the next level. This strategically fits into the larger vision of ISA and we look forward to the success of the new facility, which I am sure would add to the impetus the industry is already witnessing."
