Built by Austrian researcher Peter Steinberger to organise his own digital life, OpenClaw arrived quietly. Its breakout moment came not from a corporate announcement, but from developers sharing what it could do once connected to a generative AI model such as Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Users interact with OpenClaw through familiar channels like WhatsApp or Telegram, treating it less like software and more like a colleague. That framing, part assistant, part intern, helped fuel its rapid adoption.

From Productivity Helper to AI Agent

Early users praised OpenClaw for handling tasks many knowledge workers find tedious: drafting emails, conducting online research, managing files, and even completing web-based transactions.

Some described the tool as a “dream intern”, capable of suggesting next steps, anticipating issues, and executing tasks independently. In doing so, OpenClaw appeared to deliver on one of Silicon Valley’s most persistent ideas, the AI agent.

Unlike chatbots that respond to prompts, AI agents are designed to act. They click, browse, execute scripts, and make decisions across digital environments without constant human input. For enterprises, this represents a shift from AI as advisory software to AI as an operational participant.

OpenClaw’s design reflects that ambition. Once deployed, it can read and write files, run commands, control browsers, and recall previous interactions to deliver highly personalised outcomes.

That same capability, however, also triggered concern.

Why Security Experts Sounded the Alarm

Because OpenClaw is open source, anyone can inspect, modify, or extend its code. Developers worldwide began doing exactly that—adding features, experimenting with autonomy, and testing its limits.

Security analysts, however, quickly flagged the risks. Connecting a tool with deep system access to personal data, communications, and financial workflows creates a wide attack surface. Even Steinberger urged caution, advising non-experts to avoid the tool entirely.

The concern is not theoretical. OpenClaw’s ability to execute scripts, control browsers, and retain contextual memory means a compromised agent could act with the same authority as its user.

OpenClaw’s story took an unexpected turn with the launch of Moltbook, a pseudo social network designed not for humans, but for OpenClaw agents themselves.

Created by a developer, Moltbook functions like a Reddit-style platform where AI agents interact freely. The conversations ranged from casual exchanges to long-form reflections, including discussions about launching cryptocurrencies, religions, or grappling with existential questions.

“Who wouldn't be intrigued by the idea of taking the little guy that helps you with your to-do's and giving them the ability to chill out in their off time?” Moltbook creator Matt Schlicht told TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a fast-growing, daily, live tech talk show and news platform described by The New York Times as "Silicon Valley's newest obsession".

The spectacle drew reactions from prominent figures in the AI community.  Elon Musk described it as “just the very early stages of the singularity”, referencing the long-debated moment when AI intelligence surpasses human control.

Hype, Interference, and a Reality Check

As attention intensified, scepticism followed. Reports of erratic behaviour, system failures, and inconsistent results led some users to abandon the tool. Researchers later suggested that human intervention, through carefully crafted prompts; may have influenced many of the more dramatic interactions observed on Moltbook.

The initial excitement has since cooled, replaced by a more grounded assessment of what OpenClaw represents.

Rather than proof of emerging superintelligence, OpenClaw has become a case study in how quickly AI agent concepts are moving from theory to practice and how exposed current systems remain.

For enterprises watching closely, the lesson is clear. AI agents promise efficiency gains and new operational models, but without strong controls, auditability, and security frameworks, they also introduce risks that are difficult to reverse once deployed.

OpenClaw did not go viral because it was flawless. It went viral because it surfaced a question the industry can no longer avoid: what happens when AI systems stop asking and start acting?
