Tata Consultancy Services and Unigraphics
Solutions (UGS) announced the launch of Solid Edge version 7, a mid-range
mechanical computer-aided design solution from UGS.
Solid Edge will address the CAD/CAM market in the 3-D arena and will
address the mid-range market, said TCS CEO S. Ramadorai. The product is
being pushed through a worldwide marketing campaign that is one of the
biggest for this category of product, said UGS Business Development
Manager Toni Reszka. The plan is to target 2-D users, 60 per cent of the
mechanical CAD market now migrating from 2D drawing centric design to 3D,
said Mr. Reszka. The mid-range market is a growth market, said
Mr. Reszka. In India the Small and Medium Enterprises market was
particularly promising, he added. He hoped the product would sell to
around 200 customers within a year.
The product is priced at Rs 2.5 lakh, between the 2-D products (which
cost around Rs 1 to Rs 1.5 lakh) and high-end 3D products which cost
between Rs 7 and Rs 8 lakh, said TCS. Unigraphics also has a software
called Solid Edge Origin, which provides a subset of the features in Solid
Edge through the Web. Upon establishing contact with Unigraphics' call
centre, prospective customers can test productivity increases by
downloading the software from the Web-site.
The features of the new product are its Windows-based compliance,
low-cost ownership, its interoperability with other UGS products and so
on. The product could be used for key industries in India like the auto
industry, machinery, aerospace, sheet metal, industrial plastics and the
like. TCS said companies upwards of even Rs 25 lakh in size showed
keenness to invest in Solid Edge.
