BANGALORE: IT services major TCS, which has 200 consultants working in three centers in China, hopes to establish more sales and marketing as well as engineering centers there. Speaking to the press after meeting the Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, TCS chief S Ramadorai said, "There are huge opportunities in China especially in the BFSI segment with banks and FIs needing to follow regulatory systems. Other growth areas include the mobile space, where China has 500 million users, manufacturing and government."

He said that TCS would invest in building competencies in training, quality and language. The company has so far invested $two million in the country.

TCS China country manager V Rajanna said, "We have a three-pronged approach for the country-to use China for serving global customers, as an offshoring base for APAC and also to tap the domestic market."

When posed a question on whether the Indian IT industry feared competition from China, Ramadorai said, "We believe in pursuing the market opportunity rather than think of China as competition." He said that the salaries paid in TCS China were 10 percent -15 percent higher than India.

On the challenges faced by the company in China, he said that sourcing talent and scaling up posed problems as well as mobility between places. He also informed that he plans to lead an IT delegation from NASSCOM to China to look for partnerships.

TCS was the first Indian software company to set up operations in China in 2002. It has its presence in three offices spread across Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing. Around 90 percent of the 200 strong TCS team are local Chinese employees who deliver software and engineering solutions. TCS China is also the first and only enterprise in China to be assessed at CMM and PCM Level 5.
