Tamil Nadu bans mobile phones in schools

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Tamil Nadu government has banned the usage of mobile phones in school campuses with immediate effect.

In a notification, the state minister for education, Thangam Thennarasu said that the attention of students and teachers is getting diverted from education by the usage of mobile phones.

“Many educationists, parents and the public at large have drawn the governments’ attention, by citing that the effectiveness of teachers is also being disturbed by the usage of mobile phones. Moreover, there is also an increase in the number of students indulging in sending SMS’ during class-hours,” he said.

“By banning usage of mobile phones in school campuses, we believe that the student’s learning will increase with the teachers also utilizing their teaching time better. Hence, we had considered a proposal to ban mobile phone usage across age groups in schools,” the minister said.

The notification also asked the state director of school education to create awareness’ among the positive effects of such a ban among the students and parents.
