The project, initiated by the Department of Electronics, is part of the

Government’s effort for VLSI education, which is key to its goal of making India a

major centre for design activities in the future.

Under the program, 19 top technical universities such as IITs will set up VLSI

laboratory equipped with various Synopsys front-end tools. India has good potential of

becoming a design superpower, said DoE secretary Ravindra Gupta.

Synopsys, which has a research and development centre at Bangalore, the first outside

the US, hopes that some part of the shortage of design professionals would be solved

through the programme, said Synopsys India managing director Sanjay Nayak.

Synopsys also held its mini-design automation conference in Bangalore, the fourth

annual such event, meant to make design professionals here aware of the latest Synopsys

tools, technologies and trends in the design industry worldwide.
