NEW DELHI: Symantec's India arm in Pune has introduced a high performance scanning engine for viruses.

This will replace the older version of the engine. This is the first ever product from Symantec's facility in India. Symantec got its Pune facility following its acquisition of Veritas, a security solutions provider. The facility has an engineering team of 1700.

Symantec is expected to double its India presence over the next few years.

John W. Thomson, chairman and CEO of Symantec said, “With falling tech stocks in the US, India was an obvious choice. Moreover, it is such a wonderfully talented country. If we want to grow, if we want to fulfill our aspirations, we should have the quality workforce that lives in India. It has taken me seven years in Symantec to finally get to that point, but we are here now and that's what's important.”

Commenting on the market in India, Thompson said, “With 9 per cent to 10 per cent GDP growth rate, you want to be in India. Ultimately this will be a very large consuming market, at the corporate or government level, and over time it will be a robust consumer market as well.”

Thomson added: “Symantec wants to participate and we have a terrific team here and it's doing a great job. As a matter of fact, our performance in this market is far greater than the average for both our Asia-Pacific region as well as the growth rate for the tech sector or the security software sector in general.”
