Dalal was detained on September16, 2008 by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for tax evasion of almost Rs 25 crore. D Venkatesh, Director of Softcell Technologies said that Dalal was produced before the Magistrate on September 17, 2008. He said, “We produced the right bail papers and the Court released him considering our request.”

As reported earlier by DQ Channels, the DRI alleged that Softcell imported embedded software from Microsoft Singapore in the form of CDs and DVDs and it paid customs duty only for the software that was present in CD format. It claimed that this tax was just five percent of the value of the software shipment, while the tax for software imported in the form of paper licenses was unpaid.

The promoters of Softcell are now working out the legal recourse they can take in this matter.
