Sun Tech kicks off in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Sun Tech Days, a global developer event organized by Sun Microsystems was kicked off here amidst a gathering of developers, executives representing companies and students from across the globe.

Rich Green, executive vice president, Sun Microsystems said that India is witnessing tremendous growth not just in the business but also on the web.

This growth would only get bigger and better in the coming quarters.

“Web economy would continue to grow and new applications would enable life on the web.”

So what would fuel this phenomenon?

“Free and open source is the engine that powers this innovation”, he said.

With open source revolution growing by leaps, application development and project management is estimated to grow to $127 million in 2007.

Again, applications and content are converging and application developers are evolving.

Green said, “Traditional models such as cycle times were based from month to years, but now things need to be immediate and iterative. Also, you have to create content everyday and update it in real time.”

Talking on the role of developers in this open source event, Green said: "Developers are the backbone of software development and open communities. They create new possibilities, inspire thought and drive innovation.”

“Open source is all about participation and as an organization, which bases its business model on open source, Sun strongly believes that sharing and collaborating with the developer community is the key to building opportunities.”

The theme for this year’s session is –“Open Opportunities” and is covering technologies such as Java EE, JRuby, JavaFX, NetBeans, Java SE, OpenJDK, OpenSolaaris amongst others.

With the developer population of Sun growing at such a fast pace in the country and standing at 652,610, he stressed that this conference would highlight the importance for the Indian developer community to graduate to the next level of contributing, competing and collaborating on platforms of global technological expertise.
