BANGALORE: Sun Microsystems has announced plans to provide a new Linux
version of the iPlanet Application Server software. This comes as a move to
support cross platform across the Sun Open Net Environment, Sun ONE.
Sun ONE is the company’s vision, architecture, platform and expertise for
developing and deploying services on demand. Currently supporting platforms such
as Solaris Operating Environment, Windows, IBM AIX, HP-UX and OS/390, Sun is now
expanding its Linux support. This support is extended to existing versions of
the iPlanet Web Server for content generation, iPlanet Message Queue for
integration and Forte for Java tools to include the iPlanet Application Server
for a complete development environment on Linux.
"Over the past year, we have seen increased demand among our customer base
for Linux support. While most customers are continuing to deploy on the Solaris
OE platform, they are developing on multiple platforms and we are committed to
providing the robust, open foundation they need to build applications and
services on demand," said, Sun’s vice president of iPlanet product
marketing, Wes Wasson. "Coupled with the Forte
Edition, Sun will soon offer open source developers a compelling and
comprehensive end-to-end Linux development environment that enables developers
to easily build, test and debug robust services on demand and J2EE
applications."
The iPlanet Application Server is a robust J2EE platform for the development,
deployment, and management of application services. The product includes Java
Server Pages (JSP), servlet, EJB architecture and an integrated transaction
monitor for managing distributed transactions.
Business process automation services and connectivity to enterprise
applications are also provided through an integration framework that enables
developers to retrieve data and business logic out of SAP and other backend
systems without having to leave the Java technology environment. Linux support
for the iPlanet Application Server is expected to be released in June of this
year. More information on the iPlanet Application Server is available at www.iplanet.com.
