BANGLAORE: Sun Microsystems president and COO Jonathan Schwartz announced a whole lot of new software initiatives in his address in Shanghai, China.
While Sun has categorically refused to open source the Java code, they are considering to make Solaris operating system, open source. This step is taken to bring more collaboration to the development process, like the JCP. Said an online report.
Sun has not disclosed any timeline for this to happen but the announcement has left its users worried about the changes that this may bring in the Sun licensing agreements.
Sun also announced an innovative pricing scheme for what it calls Sun Preventative Services based on the customer’s enterprise data center deployment. A key element of the service is Sun Net Connect, a Web-based system management tool that lets IT folks self-monitor systems and software. Said the online report.
The company has also announced its first radio frequency identification (RFID) software package to help manage the data flow for RFID systems.
Sun CEO Scott McNealy also expressed that they are looking at increasing their R&D budget for software and services.
