Students cheer as IT majors take freshers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:After IITs, RECs and IIMs, the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (CET) had been a happy hunting ground for companies to get new recruits. And its alumni has occupied commanding positions in industry and despite the recessionary trends this year, 183 final year students mainly from Computer Science, Electronics and Applied Electronics streams have already got placements in leading IT firms.



Cognizant Technology Systems, Infosys, Wipro, Tata Consultancy, Cypress Semiconductors are some of the firms that have chosen CET pass outs this year. Cypress Semiconductors has offered the highest salary of Rs 3.8 lakh per annum to a student while Cognizant has offered Rs 2.6 lakh per annum and Infosys offered a Rs 17,000 per month package to students. Computer science students were more in demand followed by electronics, applied electronics. There was less demand for mechanical, electrical and civil streams , according to college officials.



Infosys gave appointment letters to 53 students, Cognizant gave 49 offer letters. Last year altogether 400 students had got placement through campus selection. The college celebrated the occasion by inviting State Education Minister Nalakathu Soopy to distribute the appointment letters to the students which was attended by K Mohandas, S K Mohan, College Principal and parents.



CET, one of the oldest engineering colleges in Kerala, was identified by the State Government for upgradation of the college to the level of center of excellence using World Bank funding a year ago.
