BANGALORE: "There are several broad trends in storage technology today. Hard disks are becoming ubiquitous. Tape is still irreplaceable for archival purposes, even as tape capacity is on the rise. RAID is becoming cheaper," said Krishna Kumar, Executive Editor of PC Quest, India’s leading IT users magazine. He was speaking at a workshop on Storage Management and Disaster recovery organized jointly by PC Quest and HP on June 26, 2003.

Storage is identified as an area where IT spending is likely to rise in the coming year. "Storage along with Network management, application management, inkjet and laser printing is an area where IT spending is likely to grow above 40 percent in the coming year," said Kumar. He also pointed out that IT spending was directly related to GDP growth in the country i.e. whenever there was a rise in GDP, IT spending rose concurrently.

Experts at the workshop also spoke about the NAS-SAN debate. "Enterprise wide storage management is in, thanks to the growing awareness about disaster recovery. Internet data centers have also started gaining acceptance. In the short term, Direct Attached Storage (DAS), Storage Area Networks (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) will co-exist," he added.

Other experts at the workshop also seemed to share this view. " NAS, SAN and SAS will continue to coexist. Whereas SAS will continue to appeal to the SOHO segment, NAS is ideal for the midsize enterprise and SAN is apt for the large enterprises," said Exocore Consulting Director Gopi Garge.
