Uber partnered with the Delhi Government to support cleaner commuting choices, rolling out a set of initiatives aimed at nudging residents toward public transport, shared mobility, and electric vehicles as the city looks to curb air pollution and congestion.
The collaboration aligned with the Delhi Government’s broader push to reduce private vehicle usage and improve air quality by making sustainable travel options more accessible and convenient for everyday commuters.
Making the Metro Easier to Use
As part of the initiative, Uber introduced incentives to encourage first-time use of the Delhi Metro through its app. Riders booking a Metro ticket on Uber for the first time were offered a free ride worth up to ₹25 until January 18.
By integrating Metro ticketing into the Uber app, the company aimed to simplify access to public transport, reduce queues at stations, and remove friction from daily commuting. To address first- and last-mile challenges, Uber also offered discounts of up to 30% on auto and bike rides to and from Metro stations until February 8.
The move targeted one of the most common barriers to Metro adoption: connectivity between stations and residential or commercial hubs.
Cleaner Alternatives for Longer Trips
Beyond public transport, Uber expanded incentives for shared and electric mobility options to reduce reliance on private cars for longer journeys. With nearly 1,000 electric vehicles operating in Delhi, Uber Electric was positioned as a lower-emission alternative, running with a 10% discount until February 8.
Uber Shuttle, its shared high-capacity commuting service, was also offered with discounts of up to 30%. The service aimed to reduce the number of individual vehicles on the road by consolidating trips, supporting more efficient use of urban road space.
Together, the Metro integration, shared rides, and EV offerings were designed to complement Delhi’s public transport network rather than compete with it.
Government Push on Air Quality
The Delhi Government welcomed initiatives that encourage residents to move away from private vehicle usage.
Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Hon’ble Minister for Environment, Forest & Wildlife, Government of NCT of Delhi, said, “Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Government has announced a series of initiatives to curb air pollution. But Delhi’s air quality challenge cannot be addressed without reducing the number of private vehicles on our roads. We appreciate efforts that encourage greater use of public transport, shared travel, and cleaner mobility options. Initiatives that provide viable alternatives to private cars support the Delhi Government’s broader strategy to improve air quality and ease congestion.”
Platform Role in Urban Mobility
Uber said the partnership reflected a broader effort to work with city authorities on sustainable transport solutions.
Amit Deshpande, Head – City Operations, Uber India said, “Tackling air quality challenges requires collective action and coordinated solutions. We’re proud to support the Delhi Government’s efforts by making it easier for people to choose public transit and sustainable mobility options. Whether it’s discounted Metro tickets, reliable first- and last-mile rides, and electric vehicles or shared high-capacity vehicles – our focus is on enabling smarter and sustainable choices for daily travel.”
Uber said it would continue engaging with transport authorities and city stakeholders to scale initiatives that support cleaner air and more efficient urban mobility in Delhi.
