ST-Ericsson begins manufacturing TD-LTE chipset

NEW DELHI: ST-Ericsson, the company that showcased TD-LTE solutions with Ericsson, claims to have started commercial production of TD-LTE chipset.

"Our TD-LTE chipset is commercially available now and we anticipate commercial TD-LTE devices to be available in 2011, in line with the commercial network deployments. Our next generation modem will support both versions of LTE, FDD and TDD, as well as HSPA+ and EDGE along with TD-SCDMA,"," said Aravind Pai, sales and marketing director, ST-Ericsson India.

TD-LTE chipsets are the most awaited and core component for development of TD-LTE eco-system. Experts in industry always counted non-availability of TD-LTE chipsets in delay of TD-LTE deployment across globe.

Commercial production of TD-LTE chipset by St-Ericsson has infused weight in logic of people lobbying for adoption of TD-LTE.

Earlier in interaction with CIOL, Per Thorzell, head, radio Access Network, Ericsson India has also mentioned same thing. According to Thorzell, first half of 2011 will see availability of dongles as access device and in second half of the year there will be more devices of different form factor to support access of TD-LTE network.

Qualcomm, a TD-LTE evangelist has not declared it plan for starting commercial production of TD-LTE chipsets but it has expressed confidence to start TD-LTE service in India in the year 2011.

“We will start offering TD-LTE service in India anytime in 2011,” said Kanwalinder Singh, president, India and SAARC, Qualcomm in an interaction with CIOL.
