Sri Lanka Telecom tests Aperto WiMAX solution

NEW DELHI: Aperto Networks today announced that Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has started the deployment and testing of WiMAX broadband wireless solution, based on equipment provided by Aperto.

Vice president, Marketing and Alliances, Aperto, Manish Gupta said that services based on the WiMAX network would be made commercially available upon completion.

“The trail process will continue for around 45 days after which SLT will look for making it available. Aperto has provided various elements of the WiMax network and is providing technical assistance in execution of the trail,” Gupta said.

Referring to the Indian market, Gupta said that India has the potential to become the single largest WiMAX market. He said that the company has been investing huge amount during this year. However, he denied revealing any figures on the investment.

“We have partnered with VSNL to deliver wireless broadband services across the country. Three of the top five service providers have installed our solution in India, and VSNL is one of them. More than 10 service providers have commercially deployed our solution,” Gupta added.

He said that the recently set up WiMAX development center in Bangalore will focus on WiMAX technology. The center will develop both hardware and software for the global market.

“The global R&D is going to happen in India soon in that development center. The products developed there will also be made available for the global market,” he said.
