CAMBRIDGE, UK: Red Gate Software has released SQL Data Generator, a new tool that automatically populates MS SQL Server databases with intelligent and meaningful test data.

“In less than the time it took me to get a cup of coffee, SQL Data Generator created a database with 2 million rows of data for each of 10 tables,” says Stephanie Beach, QA manager for Certica Solutions. “This tool not only allows me to make large databases with varied data types, it is smart enough to create logical data such as months, cities and dates. With its ease of use, logical user interface, smart data creation, and speed, it’s the best data generator I’ve ever used.”

SQL Data Generator replaces the hours of manually populating databases with a one-click solution: Select the database and SQL Data Generator populates it with realistic test data by automatically assigning an appropriate generator based on column names. Test data can also be easily customized.

Database developers need data for testing, but often cannot use live data because of privacy issues,” says David Connell, SQL Data Generator project manager. “The higher the quality of data, the easier it is to develop an application. SQL Data Generator provides the high-quality data and makes it simple to quickly populate databases with anything from a few thousand to millions of records.”

“It used to take me hours to generate useful test data,” says Michael Gartner of Quintech. “With SQL Data Generator, I generated better data in only half an hour, and after initial customization was done, in only seconds with just one click.”

In addition to developing new applications, SQL Data Generator makes it easy to test database capacity and determine future server requirements, and to demonstrate products to clients without revealing sensitive data.
