Spice was first to move out of BWA auction

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Spice Internet Service Provider was the first company to move out of the BWA auction that was recently held by the Department of Telecom, followed by Reliance, Tata Communications, Vodafone and Idea cellular.

BWA auction started on May 24 and ended on June 11, after completion of 117 rounds. The auction helped government of India to garner Rs 38,543.31 crore.

Spice Internet exited from the auction after 44th round and was last seen bidding for Mumabi circle at Rs 1012.96 crore, as per the data sheet of DoT. Spice exited after bidding various circles for a total of Rs 2025.92 crore, but failed to secure any circle during the auction.

Reliance and Tata Communications also tried for winning the Mumbai circle at Rs 2342.12 crore and Rs 2305.92 crore respectively. Reliance exited after 50th round of auction and was immediately followed by Tata Communication at the end of 51st round.

Vodafone put in only Rs 275.13 crore to bid for a few circles in the auction. The company tried heavily for Punjab and Kolkata circle. Vodafone exited from the auction at the end 62nd round.

Idea Cellular tried to play in the auction with Rs 334. 43 crore and exited at the end of 102nd round.

Spice Internet, Reliance Wimax, Tata Communications and Idea Cellular could not win any circle during the auction.

In the auction, Infotel, now RIL-Infotel after RIL bought the company, was the pan-India winner for BWA spectrum. The other winners of the BWA auction were Qualcomm, Bharti, Tikona, Aircel and Augere (Mauritius). BSNL and MTNL were allotted one slot each of BWA spectrum in the area of their operation on priority but they had to match the price of winning bid amount in those circles.
