BANGALORE: Wipro’s fully owned BPO arm, Spectramind, plans to set up its fifth center in New Mumbai. This would be to substantiate its presence in Mumbai, where the company has an existing 1,400-seat facility. Its other centers are located in Delhi, Chennai and Pune. A couple of day’s back rival company MSource, the BPO arm of Mphasis, had announced plans of setting up an Rs 18 crore BPO center in the cosmopolitan city.

Interestingly, the company has no presence in the top two hubs of Nasscom’s super 9 ITES destination, Hyderabad and Kochi. "We have an internal analysis of selecting the location of a center. It depends on the fiber optic connectivity, infrastructure availability, options for scalability, people, etc., In that way New Mumbai is an upcoming location and well connected," remarked Wipro Spectramind President and CEO, Raman Roy.

Spectramind has decided to add about 500 to 600 seats through the upcoming facility in New Mumbai, while its total strength as of December 31, 2002 was 3,884. The company had added 686 employees during the October-December quarter and expects to add about 500 seats on an average every quarter for the next couple of years.

"Since BPO outsourcing is a very sensitive issue all our customers are very particular about sharing information of any kind. In that line Microsoft being a marquee client we are not in a position to share any more details other than informing that they are our clients," stated, Wipro Technologies Vice Chairman and CEO, Vivek Paul. Incidentally all the four new customers of Spectramind acquired during the quarter are existing clients of Wipro Limited.
