Source code of Simputer appns, out in the open

BANGALORE: Encore Software, creators of the Encore Simputer, has decided to open the source code of all applications and tools that Encore has developed for its Simputer. In addition the company will make public the complete hardware designs for this device.







According to the press release, this move will enable developers across the world to create numerous cutting-edge applications for the Encore Simputer, thereby making it the most function-rich handheld device available in the market today. By doing this, Encore will help create a commercially viable business ecosystem around its Simputer and custom applications written for it.







According to Encore Software founder, chairman and CEO Vinay Deshpande, "The Encore Simputer is a cost-effective, versatile mobile computing solution that supports multiple applications. It can be customized for varying requirements thereby making it an effective multi-functional device. We expect that opening our source code will lead to the development of numerous innovative applications that will play an important role in matters such as e-governance, micro banking enterprise solutions among others."







According to Encore Software mobile computing products GM Samyeer Metrani, "The next stop on the Encore Simputer roadmap is the development of more vertical product lines based on the Simputer platform and customizing them for a large variety of government, enterprise and developmental needs. The Encore Simputer will emerge as one of India's strongest examples of innovation in hi-technology."







Some of the other mobile computing products that Encore has pioneered include a low cost programmable handheld device called the Chhota and the SATHI a product for the Indian Army. These products have been deployed in a number of diverse uses from serving in the Indian army to sales force automation, ticketing, utility billing and even health surveys.
