BANGALORE: According to an online report Sun Microsystems' plans to open up the entire source code of Solaris, its Unix-based operating system. Sun unveiled its plan of opening the Solaris code sometime back but sources confirmed that all the 'rocket science' would be out in the open instead of just bits and pieces of the millions of lines of code.

The open-source project may be called OpenSolaris.org and will be unveiled later this year.

There are mixed reactions to the announcement, some solution providers feel that this may attract more and more people to Solaris, some others are of the view that this will not effect the popularity of Linux.

Sun has in the recent past made a few more announcements about its contribution to the open source community. It has opened the source code of Project Looking Glass, a next-generation 3D desktop environment, Java 3D API, JDesktop Integration Components (JDIC) etc. Inspite of all these contributions, the Java creator has come under a lot of criticism for not giving Java code over to the community.
