BANGALORE: Software exports rose by 59 per cent during the first half of the first half of the current fiscal. According to a National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) survey, export revenue touched Rs 8,060 crore during the six-month period ending September 1999 against Rs 5,090 crore in 1998-99. The figure is almost 10.5 per cent of India’s total exports of US$17.4 billion during the period.

Nasscom President Dewang Mehta attributed this phenomenal growth rate to "the growing global respect of Indian IT software expertise and fresh initiatives taken by Indian infotech companies and strategies adopted by Nasscom with liberal environment provided by Government solutions in sectors like Banking, Manufacturing, Process industry, Infrastructure, Government, Apparel. Mr Mehta further added,"the Government’s commitment to promote the I.T. industry is very evident, as even the Presidential address to both Houses of Parliament stressed the importance of this industry and the need to reach the software export target of US$50 billion by 2008."

Nasscom has also outlined its plans for India’s Millennium IT event - Nasscom 2000, scheduled to be held from February 2-5, 2000 at Mumbai.
