SMB guide: How to detect computer virus

BANGALORE, INDIA: Since computers form an integral part of a small business/small enterprise, it would be desirable to have these computers in good working condition. Since computers are normally prone to viruses, there has to be a mechanism to aid SMB/SME owners in detecting and removing them.

Let us start with how to detect computer virus

1. The most fundamental symptom of a virus attack is frequent rebooting which means that your computer often restarts by itself.

2. Unexpected/undesirable pop-up menus: This means that when you are working on your computer, messages flash up unexpectedly.

3. Restricted Internet access: When you are not able to view certain websites inspite of your computer Firewall allowing access to these sites, it is an indication that a virus might have infected your computer which in turn is blocking effective internet access.

4. Unexpected working of computer modem/hard disk: If you think that the computer hard-disk/modem is working more than usual, then address the issue as early as possible.

5. Computer crash: If you experience regular computer crashes, then this could be due to active virus activity which is causing your computer circuitry to crash frequently.

SOLUTIONS

1. If you think that your computer is infected, then you can restore your computer using the already available System Restore tools.

2. Suppose the System restore doesn't work, then boot your system in the Safe Mode. After successful booting of the computer in Safe Mode, use your anti-virus software to scan and remove the threat completely from your system.

3. Update your anti-virus software as and when the new updates are released. This will help the anti-virus software detect new threats.
