In this age of the global workplace, the conference call is an important tool. Polycom's conference devices are instantly recognizable thanks to their unique (and effective) three-pronged design. The VS300 and 500 have the same recognizable design, only a little smaller, a little rounder and with a smattering of new features thrown in.

Both devices minimize cable clutter in a smart way; the telephone line plugs into the power brick, so a single cable carries power and phone signal to the VoiceStation. It can also be wall-mounted to save space. The power brick meanwhile, can be hidden away anywhere.

Both come with a large and comfortable keypad with basic controls such as volume, mute, redial and flash. Sound from the central loudspeaker is optimized for speech and is audible even from up to 12 feet away in a quiet environment. The built in microphones pick up sound till about 4 to 5 feet away. This has been deliberately done to filter out unwanted noise. In addition, some smart circuitry filters out other background noise so that your caller only hears voices and not printers and air conditioners.

The VS500 adds Bluetooth capability over and above the VS300. With Bluetooth, you can pair your cell phone with it and then use the VS500 as the loudspeaker. You can also connect via Bluetooth to a laptop or desktop computer and then route your VoIP calls (like with Skype or Gtalk) through it – a pretty neat feature. Probably the only downside to these devices is the high price.
