HYDERABAD: With more and more communication applications migrating to IP, there has been an increase in malicious attacks due to the openness of the network.

The shift, primarily meant for cost cutting, also invites abuse of voice telephony. To address this problem US-based Sipera Systems, security providers for VoIP, mobile and multimedia communications, having development centre in Hyderabad, has launched a comprehensive IP Communication Security product Sipera IPCS 310. The newly-launched security system is specially targeted at the end-users.

``Sipera IPCS protects applications from DoS/DDoS attacks, stealth, spoofing, and VoIP spam. At the same time it allows legitimate calls to be processed simultaneously,'' says Ravi Sutrave, director of engineers, Sipera Systems.

The Sipera IPCS monitors VoIP traffic, detects anomalies in traffic and call patterns, and identifies threats, to protect end-user devices and network infrastructures against attacks, misuse and service abuse.

``It employs sophisticated security functionality with patented protection techniques to analyze every call,'' adds Sutrave.

According to Sipera, the system is deployed as a bump in the wire without an IP address in any existing VoIP infrastructure and hence does not require on-site interoperability testing or network configuration changes.

For the last two years, Sipera VIPER lab discovered thousands of attacks for SIP/UMA/IMS networks. Prior to the launch Sipera IPCS 310 was tested for several months to protect real-time mission-critical IP communications.

``Unlike other abuses, the attacks committed on voice telephony need immediate action. The time required to detect the abuse is very important. This is where Sipera IPCA 310 comes in handy,'' explains Sutrave.

Sipera's integrated, real-time security, designed to deal with threats coming even from encrypted network traffic. Sipera IPCS products can be deployed in any existing VoIP infrastructure with no need for on-site interoperability testing, due to Sipera's close development and integration work with leading VoIP infrastructure manufacturers.

Sipera, which has invested more than Rs 12 crores on the facility in Hyderabad, plans to increase its headcount to 50 by the end of this year.

Last week the company received a $13.2 million Series round funding that included Sequoia Capital along with prior investors Austin Ventures and STAR Ventures. Through this funding Sipera plans to expand its operations. Plans are also afoot to extend its VoIP security solutions to wireless operators.

After IPCS 310, Sipera will launch the carrier group products IPCS 410, IPCS 510 and IPCS 610. IPCS is expected to hit the market in June while IPCS 510 and IPCS 610 will be launched in September and December respectively.
