SingTel names CEO designate for global ops

CALIFORNIA, USA: Singapore Telecommunications named Hui Weng Cheong, currently the Chief Operating Officer of its Thai associate Advanced Info Service, as CEO designate for its international operation.

Hui, 55, will be in charge of SingTel's overseas investments which includes a 32 per cent stake in India's largest mobile phone operator Bharti and 35 per cent in Indonesia's Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel).

"He will formally assume the role on 1 December 2010, succeeding Lim Chuan Poh who is retiring from the Group," the Southeast Asia's biggest telco said in a statement.

Other firms that SingTel holds large stakes in include Philippines' Globe Telecom, Thailand's Advanced Info Services, Pacific Bangladesh Telecom and Warid Telecom in Pakistan.

Hui will be one of three CEOs reporting to SingTel Group CEO Chua Sock Koong. The other CEOs are Allen Lew, who is in charge of Singapore, and Paul O'Sullivan, who takes care of SingTel Optus, Australia's second largest telecom firm.
