The engineering students, ">hired in 2011/2012, (though the exact number remains unknown), are still waiting for the date of joining. It's a double whammy for joinees-in-waiting. Recruited as software engineers, their work profiles have been tailored to company's needs and their pay-package slid by almost 15 per cent.

The company has now asked them to join HCL Infrastructure instead of its technologies arm and that too for HCL's outsourcing and testing engagements. The disgruntled freshers are vocal about their ire on social networking sites such as Facebook, and have organized coordinated sit-ins and protests in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Noida and Pune.

They have formed Web 2.0 groups such as ">HCL Freshers 2011 and ">HCL Freshers 2012 on Facebook. Bangalore's Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology passout Shilpananda R Hegde started a campaign and asserted: "This group is active till all of us join. Tag line of the group is: if you are not joining you are dead in this group."
