Journalism, a hard newsman's world, was considered a man's bastion till about the time I joined the profession two decades ago. The few women journalists, who had strayed into the profession were given 'soft' assignments and no night shifts.

Editors and chief reporters assigned women reporters to cover fashion, art, cinema, and other such 'girly' stuff. No political, business or crime reporting assignments for them. “What do they know of such tough topics?” used to be the common refrain.

There would be snide remarks, vulgar gossips and poor jokes circulating in the newsrooms behind the backs of women journalists.

Things have changed over the years. Women have assumed the center-stage in many media organisations. In some of the media organizations, there are more women reporters than men. Many of them are doing a better job than their male colleagues.

Women journalists tend to be more responsible, dedicated to their work and hard working. Male chauvinistic egos have received a battering in the process.

With the advent of TV followed by the Internet, many more women have entered the profession of journalism and content generation. And, they are not only marching shoulder to shoulder with their male colleagues, but in some cases leading them.

Be it graphic design, content creation, animation, programming, marketing, human resources management, women professionals are found to be occupying key positions across a wide spectrum of industry from entertainment to e-commerce and from news channels to nano technology.

With the IT and BPO boom, the work environment too has undergone a sea change. To encourage skilled women to come on-board, companies have introduced pick-up and drop-back-home facility. One can see hundreds of working women commuting to their work places in buses, trains, cars and two-wheelers even late in the night.

Beware men, you have a tough competition.
