Shanghai logs in to first official microblog

BEIJING, CHINA: The local government of Shanghai Monday launched its first official microblog where the public will be informed about new regulations, upcoming cultural activities as well as vegetable prices.

The microblog "Shanghai City" was launched on China's popular Twitter-like service Weibo.com, Xinhua reported.

Launched by the information office of the Shanghai municipal government, the microblog accumulated more than 30,000 followers in the first five hours since its launch.

It will also contain "practical information" related to activities in Shanghai, and interactions with internet users over issues of public concern.

Another microblog, the "Shanghai Metro", or the official microblog of the city's metro operator with over 1.15 million followers, is considered one of most popular government microblogs in China.

China has more than 300 million registered microblog users.
