PUNE: The University of Pune (UoP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian
Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) for setting up a high-performance computing facility at the university’s proposed center for modeling and simulation.
The center will train students in the high-performance computing and serve as basic research facility, with emphasis on modeling and simulation. A university communiqué said ‘the computing facility will help expose both researchers and students to the latest in computing technology and enable them to address the challenging scientific problems.’
As part of the MoU, the university will acquire from SGI a high performance computing system. Atlix 3700, which is a state of the art single image multi-processor environment capable of expanding upto 128 processors. The present configuration consists of 16 Itanium processors running at 1.5 Ghz, having 32 GB Ram with one terabyte of storage, the statement said, adding that the system will run on Linux.
The SGI, as part of the agreement, will also sponsor a professional chair at the university, besides establishing a fellowship fund for two research fellows.
