Sensex breaks 4100 barrier

MUMBAI: The Sensex opened the day sharply higher at 4,146.56, and is currently ruling firm at 4,133.73, up 38.34 points or 0.94 per cent on the back of good gains in pharmaceutical and PSU counters.

The Nifty, meanwhile, rose by a per cent to rule strong at 1313.90.

The BSE PSU index jumped 30.14 points or 1.09 per cent at 2,790.82 on the back of good gains in the oil and gas scrips. ONGC (+2.04% at Rs 570), BPCL (+0.83% at Rs 303.50), HPCL (+0.71% at Rs 398.65), Chennai Petroleum (+2% at Rs 74) were among the prominent gainers in the sector. MRPL, however, lost out on the general uptrend to trade 0.67 per cent lower at Rs 37.25.

Among the PSU metal stocks, SAIL (+4.55% at Rs 40.25) was among the top gainers, while Nalco (+0.19% at Rs 133.50) saw marginal upsides. Other stocks such as PSU stocks such as BHEL, Container Corporation of India and Shipping Corporation of India saw buying interest.

The BSE HC index climbed 24.99 points or 1.46 to rule at 1,732.45 as pharma bigwigs such as Ranbaxy Laboratories (+2.64% at Rs 889), Dr Reddy Laboratories (+1.09% at Rs 1,111) posted good gains, well supported by second rung stocks such as Cipla, Aventis Pharma and Wockhardt.

Most of the telecom stocks witnessed gains. MTNL (+3.04% at Rs 135.50) was among the major gainers, closely followed by Bharti Tele Ventures, VSNL and Himachal Futuristics.

Sensex heavyweights Reliance (+0.88% at Rs 374.80), Infosys Technologies (+0.22% at Rs 3,725), State Bank of India (+0.48% at Rs 439) and Hindustan Lever (+0.05% at Rs 189.50) were also ruling in black.
