Melona Espinoso, 32, is a mother of two, popularly known as 'yummydoll4u' on the portal she work for. “It's tiresome, sitting everyday on the cushion in this runty space surrounded by floral curtains in a shape of room-walls and keep on chatting with customers. But the good part is that every two weeks I get some 7500 peso (local currency) to support my living and family,” Melona says.

Her duty starts early morning at 7 am and goes till the mid-night as she satisfies and keeps every customer happy one after the other by engaging them in some hot spicy chat, either voice on mic or text chat. Throughout the talks with the customers, she keeps on flaunting her body around in the tiny area which resembles a miniature bed room.

She, like several others Filipino women, today works for many online adult websites and earn their livelihood. However the entry into this online flesh trade operated from unknown locations across the world is a kind of one way traffic as Melona points out, “Hard to get out once you entered.”

“If I can find any other work or job with a good regular income to support my children then I will certainly give up this work as I personally don't like it,” she says. Further, “Since I was left by my boyfriend, I want an honest man in my life who can accept me with my two kids and support me,” she adds.

Though Melona reveals the portal's name — myfreecams.com for which she works from her home, she remains tight lipped about the people who runs the website and pays her. The portal offers paid online live web cam chats to visitors. It attracts the visitors with a long list of profile pages, featuring skimpily dressed 'models'.

Although, Melona's story is a sad one, not a rare in this country that closely competes with India in the business process outsourcing (BPO) space. In this island nation, one could easily come across many such females that works for several adult portals.

These females go to any of those popular online chat rooms such as Yahoo and others, where they try to grab attentions of other chat room users by posting alluring messages and trying to become friendly.

And once the trap is set, these ‘models’ try to drive the users out of the chat rooms to those adult sites. This is the modus operandi for getting potential clients and drive traffic to those adult portals.

Though, Philippines has edged India in terms of cost arbitrage to an extent, it is facing a huge task of curbing the menace of cybercrime such as online flesh trade, web based human trafficking, and other issues caused by adult websites that are exploiting the locals.

According to Alexander Villafania, a journalist, Philippines have laws against human trafficking and cybercrimes, and in case of females working for adult web cam sites, both the laws are applicable. “But most of such sites are hosted and operates from outside the country and are unregistered here, so the local government can't take action against them,” Villafania says.

Further Villafania adds, “Even the telcos might know about the out-going data and kind of traffic from here but they are not complied to report such things as per local laws.”

“However, there's a lack of any data or statistics with regard to cybercrime here, which can help you get any idea of how big is this menace. And it’s very difficult to make any conclusion or reason out why the females are getting engaged in online porn activities,” he notes.

Alexander, a professional journalist who has been tracking the IT industry for over a decade, regularly writes for a local news portal namely Loqal.ph.

However, he feels that there exists a gap between the people's education and the kind of jobs that are available here. “There's a lack of skill sets among people, which is needed for specific kind of jobs and industries. And this has led to a situation of under-employment and so you find a large population working outside the country,” Alexander explains.

Among several other reasons, the under-employment could be a reason for why females are forced or encouraged to engage in such online adult activities to support living, he says cautiously. “But it’s really difficult to point out one reason as there's no substantial data available with the government to support such incidents here,” Alexander concludes.
