The two companies have entered into a joint marketing agreement promoting Windows Vista Backup and Restore and the Maxtor OneTouch III, as a combined solution to help protect photos, music, business documents, videos and more.

Activities will include Web promotions, advertisements, launch events, trade show activities and retail promotions that focus on educating people about protecting their digital assets, Seagate said in a statement.

"With the rise in mobility and the increased creation and sharing of digital content on a variety of portable and in-home devices, the need to back up and protect content today is more important than ever," said Jim Druckrey, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate Branded Solutions. "By collaborating with Microsoft we are seeking to amplify our ongoing campaign to educate consumers and small business owners about protecting their digital lives."

As part of its second annual Backup Awareness Month in June 2006, a Harris Interactive poll2 sponsored by Seagate found that nearly half of respondents (43 per cent) had lost important data or digital files stored on computers due to a virus, hardware or software malfunction, or some other reason. While nearly half of them (46 per cent) never make backup copies of their data to external devices or media. The most frequently cited reason by those who said they never back up their data is that they are not sure how to do it or that backup is too technical (cited by 35 per cent). Together, Seagate and Microsoft help solve these issues.

"Windows Vista is designed to fit people's lives. Our work with Seagate helps us deliver on the promise of personal computing," said Dave Wascha, director of partner marketing communications for Windows Client at Microsoft Corp.

Specific co-promotions will focus on the flagship Maxtor OneTouch III, Turbo Edition that provides simple backup and high-capacity external storage, and Windows Backup. Using the Windows backup utility, consumers can choose to back up their content to an external hard drive, another drive on a PC, or other external media.
