PUNE: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) subscribers may soon be able to simultaneously use a single telephone connection for Internet and landline.

BSNL has decided to extend its Direct Internet Access System (DIAS) — currently in operational basis in Pune to around 40 odd exchanges in the city.

The system enables the use of a landline and the Internet, at the same time, by way of a set top box (modem). It links the telephone exchange and the National Internet Backbone (NIB) with the landline and computer terminal to facilitate data and voice operation on the same telephone cable.

According to BSNL officials, this is expected to be particularly beneficial to subscribers using the Internet for over an hour. This ensures that one need not dial up each time. The subscriber will have 24-hour connection and the advantage of speed.

Earlier this year, BSNL had introduced the system on an experiment basis in the city. BSNL has come out with three tariff plans for DIAS. Meanwhile, BSNL Pune would introduce its broadband service by the year-end.
