With over a million units of LTE devices shipped in 4Q CY 2014 according to a CMR survey, 4G/LTE seems ready for prime time

For all those who’ve been complaining about poor connectivity and bandwidth with 3G, there’s good news. According to CMR’s India Quarterly LTE (4G) Devices Market Review, CY 2014, March 2015, total number of LTE device shipments in the country touched has 1.06 million units during 4Q CY 2014.

These include smartphones, tablets, and data cards, with the former grabbing the lion’s share of the pie.

While this number would be miniscule as compared to the total 3G device shipments, it’s a good indicator of the times to come.

Price is the key reason for this jump. According to CMR’s lead analyst Faisal Kawoosa, is that companies like Lenovo, Xiomi, and Oneplus introduced competitively priced devices.

Here are the key survey highlights:

  • A cumulative total of close to 20 brands have shipped LTE devices into the India market.
  • Of the total LTE Smartphones shipped in India during 4Q CY 2014, 15% were exclusively sold online through retail e-commerce portals.
  • In their first month of shipping 4G Smartphones, Xiaomi and OnePlus garnered impressive market shares of 24% and 12%, respectively during December 2014. As a result, Xiaomi and OnePlus were able to make it to the ‘Top 5’ of the India LTE Smartphone brands in terms of unit shipments, during their first month of operations.
