Satyam created the new practice to displace applications that left much to be desired by way of flexibility or responsiveness.

The company intends to leverage its BPM Center of Excellence to help customers categorize, organize, improve agility, and build greater functionality into their legacy applications using PegaRULES Process Commander (PRPC). Through an iterative, phased approach, the companies are looking to mitigate the risk involved in 'big bang' transformations or the 'band-aid' approach of endless code patches.

GB Prabhat, director of consulting and enterprise solutions unit for the

company, said, "Customers are spending 80% of their annual IT budget maintaining their aging business applications -- a problem which is exacerbated by constantly changing business requirements that require code-level attention and administration, SmartBPM technology from Pegasystems provides an alternative to replacing, maintaining or re-platforming a company's inventory of legacy applications. Our Legacy Renewal and Transformation practice provides a phased approach whereby legacy code is cleansed, optimized and redeployed as business rules and business processes. The end result is a transformed application environment with enterprise-wide best practice standards and data."

The formalization of the practice is reportedly the direct result of successful implementations at some of the most demanding environments. Satyam and Pegasystems managed to transform the legacy financial systems at one of the world's largest power systems companies in the US. Over the space of two years and with eight phases of iteration, the resulting system not only delivered a two-fold productivity gain and a three-fold improvement in agility, but also provided enhanced functionality to enable financial reporting compliance.

Satyam also successfully worked on the underwriting system at one of the largest property and casualty insurance carriers. In 12 months and with four phases of iteration, SmartBPM resulted in 100% productivity improvement in the underwriting process, while delivering a three-fold improvement in the ability to introduce new policies and procedures.
