Sasken inks a deal with Inmarsat

BANGALORE, INDIA:Sasken Communication Technologies Ltd., a provider in embedded communications solutions on Thursday announced that it has entered into an agreement with Inmarsat, a provider of global mobile satellite communications services.

The agreement is to complete the development of next generation global satellite hand-held phone, said a press release.

“Sasken offers expertise in communications technology along with their capability and experience in wireless terminal development. They will make a strong partner,” said Perry Melton, chief operating officer, Inmarsat.

He further said that they would work closely with Sasken in the design and development of their satellite phone to offer a new and compelling product in their broad portfolio of services over the Inmarsat network.

Inmarsat has chosen Sasken to design and bring into pre-production the complete phone, which would include the hardware component comprising design, development and testing of antenna, RF and mechanical elements and the software component comprising protocol stacks, application framework and test lab offerings.

The handset would undergo the necessary certification processes confirming its fitness for the global market.

Rajiv Mody, chairman and CEO, Sasken said, “Sasken solutions leverage strengths ranging from semiconductor design, mobile devices and networks and draws on our deep domain knowledge in communications which has been demonstrated in our engagement with Inmarsat a pioneer in mobile satellite communication services.”

This engagement is a first for an Indian company to be involved from the design phase up to producing pre-production units, said the release.

The new Inmarsat phone would offer voice services to remote parts of the world and the target customer segment will include field and aid operations, and other private and government agencies giving them reach and capability throughout the world, added the release.
