CALIFORNIA, USA: During the first half of 2010, network adapters designed for storage area networking approached record high levels (just below 1.6 million port shipments), while network adapters and LAN on motherboard designed for local area networking achieved record high levels (almost 100 million port shipments).

This is according to analyst group Dell’Oro Group, which recently published to reports.

“High speed fibre channel adapters (8 Gbps) gained popularity around third quarter, 2009, the same period we saw consistent, robust, sequential growth of 10 Gbps Ethernet adapters. This traction correlates with servers shipping with Intel’s Nehalem-based server processor which supports 50 Gbps of in/out traffic,” said Tam Dell’Oro, president, Dell’Oro Group.

“10 Gbps Ethernet adapters with SFP+ direct attach copper almost doubled during the second quarter, a similar pattern occurred with Ethernet switches,” added Dell’Oro.

Both the SAN and network adapters quarterly reports reflect manufacturer market share. New entrants Emulex and QLogic gained share in 10 Gbps Ethernet adapters during the second quarter, 2010, while Intel gained share in 10 Gbps Ethernet controllers.
