Samsung captures 52.5% monitor market

NEW DELHI: Samsung Electronics India Information and Telecommunication Ltd (SEIIT)

maintained its position as the top ranked player in the Indian monitor market in

the first quarter 2002, according to an IDC report. Samsung has a market share

of 52.4% in the total open market for color monitors. The company sold 219,335

units valued at approximately Rs 15 crore.






In the LCD flat panel monitor market, Samsung clocked a 54.5% share. It is the
largest player in this market. Samsung also continued to perform well in the OEM

business too. Its direct OEM shipment increased 7.4% in Q1 2002. The share of

its 17 inch screen size CRTs jumped from 16.9% to 28.2% this quarter. In the

21" screen size category also, Samsung’s shipments have increased in Q1

2002 over the previous quarter. It had shipped 610 units of 21 inch CRT this

quarter.






The company also launched many promotional schemes for both its dealers and
customers. Spun around the Soccer fever, "Score with Samsung" &

"Score with Samsung–Match II" were two reward-based programs

designed for its dealers. The company pushed its 17 inch and 15 inch monitors

with the "Bol Baby Bol" and the "Big Buy" offers, which were

a big success.



Samsung performed very well in the LCD market due to large number of direct
deals with corporate like banks, hotels and other vertical segments. Samsung

also introduced state-of-the-art products in the market. Its product range

consists of 24 monitors, which addresses all segment needs.






Said Sonal Anand, Country Product Manager, SEIIT, "The market has responded
very positively to our efforts to upgrade the Indian customer preferences to 15

inch and 17 inch, which is gradually becoming mainstream. We have been spurring

this market upgradation with our constant marketing efforts for the end

consumer. Under our "Bol bay bol" offer, a consumer got a 15 inch

color monitor with an IBM via-voice software free for just Rs 6,999.



The "Big Buy" offer bundled a Lexmark inkjet printer free with every
Samsung 17 inch color monitor at a value of Rs 11,499 only. These programs were

instrumental in giving the Indian customer the much needed confidence and

impetus to move to a internationally accepted entry level size of 15 inch and 17

inch."
