The contest will see 10 winners, who will receive a combined $800,000 in prize money.

The new apps will be coordinated with Samsung's ‘Group Play' service. Group Play, a function on Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone, allows users to share content like photos, games and music at the same time and interact with one another.

"We will continue to encourage mobile developers to develop new and innovative applications with newly-launched features of our Galaxy series," Won-Pyo Hong, the head of Samsung Electronics' media solution center, said in a statement.

The challenge is open to all mobile application developers across the globe. Developers who wish to participate should sign up directly on the App Challenge website and register their apps on Samsung Apps from June 20 to August 31.

This is not the first time Samsung in hosting such a contest. In 2010, Samsung had held a similar app contest for its web TV and the winner had received KRW50 million ($40,850) for a fairy-tale reading application, according to a WSJ report.
