Officials of the company, without specifically naming anybody, accused that its competitors are sabotaging underground cable lines affecting the mobile service in the area.

Higher BSNL authorities have been informed about the matter and the company has also prepared a blue print to set up base tower switching units to offer better connectivity and service to the subscribers.

With other operators offering better services and adding new subscribers to its network, those using BSNL are facing huge inconvenience with weak network coverage and call drops. The South Assam region is one of the worst affected.

Last month the PSU had announced that the year 2007 as ‘the year of Northeast to bring about reliable and better connectivity in the region’. Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communications and IT had also urged BSNL to double its turnover by 2010. The operator plans to scale its subscriber numbers by the year-end.

Currently there are three other operators in the Assam circle besides BSNL. While Reliance, Bharti Airtel and Aircel are already operating, Hutch is planning to launch its services within a short time.
