Resource crunch makes IT cos look beyond engineers

BANGALORE: Resource crunch has forced IT services companies to hire graduates to perform some of the specific non-technical functions instead of engineers.

Advisory firm Tholons has recommended a few MNCs to hire graduates and train them according to their requirements. “There are lot of non-technical work in the IT services companies. For instance, a commerce graduate can look at some of the finance related functions in any IT services company. A graduate in commerce, with a good training, can be a good resource to the company. We have recommended this to a few MNCs”, said Avinash Vashistha, chairman and CEO of Tholons.

Tholons, which announced service globalisation trend for 2007, in its report said that the global service providers would witness a significant resource crunch.

“In the coming years India, Philippines and China will face shortage of talent pool as there would be a significant increase for IT/BPO services globally”, he said.

Vashistha suggested that IT companies in India have to look at Tier II cities for their operations. This will help them to get the talent pool from the surrounding cities around the tier II cities, he added.

He also pointed out that MNCs are now open to employee freshers. “Earlier only Indian companies were open to employee freshers. Now even MNCs are looking at that directions, he said.

Speaking on the trends in the IT recruitments, Gautam Sinha, CEO of TVA Infotech said that now Indian IT companies are looking at freshers and graduates for the non-technical work. “Still there is a war for talent at lateral hiring. However, companies are encouraging people to stay in the company and looking at long-term employee branding. It companies are looking at saving cost per employee acquistion,” he said.

Usually MNCs has to invest over Rs 40,000 as hiring expense, where as around Rs 25,000 for the Indian IT companies.
