Reliance plans mobile Intranet in 200 cities

NEW DELHI: Having entrenched itself firmly in the mobile service provider arena, Mumbai based Reliance Infocomm is planning to venture into providing mobile Intranet services in the country. The company has plans to launch its Intranet services in 20 cities by the end of March 2004 and it would be leveraging its existing Web Worlds to provide mobile intranet related services all over the country.

"We are going planing to launch this in two phases. Under the first phase 20 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkota, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad and other important cities would be targeted. Once we are through with the first phase implementation, we would venture into additional cities. Our aim is to provide this mobile Intranet service to more than 200 cities by the end of 2005," informed corporate communication head at Reliance Jimmy Mogal.

Under the umbrella of mobile Intranet, Reliance is looking forward to provide services like video conferencing, multi location web chat, VPN applications and multi location gaming as well. All this would be provided using speed of upto 144 kbps. "There are a lot of opportunities under this segment and we want to address these segments. We already have a network of 250 web world stores spread all across the country, so we would be utilizing that network to provide these services," he added.

At a time when the demand for dedicated broadband services in the SME segment is growing, Reliance is targeting the same SME segment for its mobile Intranet services. "SME segment has shown a lot of interest for this and we are looking forward to providing dedicated broadband services to this segment. However, at the same time we are not stopping only at the SME. We would also be providing the same Intranet services to very small companies comprising of two or three employees with the help of our Web Worlds," he added.
