NEW DELHI: Disqualified in the Egyptian mobile tender race, Reliance

Communications targets to offer GSM services in Sri Lanka.

Reliance has bid for the mobile license in Sri Lanka. The bid for the license
was closed on Friday, which witnessed the participation of more than 10

companies. The announcement of the winning bid is likely to be made in the

couple of days.

Currently there are four operators in Sri Lanka and this license would offer the
winner to be the fifth GSM operator in the country. However, Reliance is hopeful

of winning the license, which is estimated to be around $ 4 million. There are

also other major telecom players in the race.

The four operators offering GSM services in Sri Lanka are Mobitel owned by Sri
Lankan government, Celltel Lanka, Telekom Malaysia-owned by Dialog Telecom and

Hutchison. Telekom Malaysia is the largest GSM operator in the country.

Last month Reliance was disqualified in the bid for Egypt's third mobile license
race. The Egyptian national telecom regulator disqualified the telecom major

after the completion of the technical evaluation. Reliance Communications was

among 11 bidders who had been short listed bid for the license.
