CIOL: What is the key data center attribute?

Dileep Kumar:
Data center is the central nervous system of enterprise applications. The critical applications include: Sarbanes-Oxley, regulations compliance, VOIP, security, Wi-Fi, video conferencing, intelligent buildings, RFID, SAN, complex data modeling, real-time data processing, e-mail archival, and business continuity planning in an organization. The simultaneous use of these applications is driving the explosion for more bandwidth and putting increased pressure on the data center infrastructure. Given their growing importance, reliability is a key data center attribute, as is having the flexibility to meet future requirements.

CIOL: Do you think time has come to take the data center seriously?

DK:
Yes of course, the business landscape of India has changed and is continuing to change. This rapid growth of commerce is both unparalleled and unexpected. While Indian metros are housing global scale businesses, the semi metro cities are fast gearing up to witness the next wave of development. In such a scenario, network infrastructure will unquestionably be a key element that will drive and sustain this upsurge. High speed, high bandwidth capabilities and reliability within the network will be critical.

CIOL: What are the challenges faced in this regard?

DK:
The data center is a key resource and many organizations simply shut down when employees and customers are unable to access the servers, storage systems, and networking devices that reside there. Literally, millions of dollars can be lost in a single hour of down time for some businesses, such as large banks, airlines, package shippers, and online brokerages. Indeed, 70 percent of network downtime can be attributed to physical layer problems. Specifically, cabling faults and connection failures.
