SAN DIEGO: KT Freetel was the first carrier in the world to deploy Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW) technology that gives users the ability to download applications such as games, ring tones, entertainment and information onto their mobile devices via the Internet.

Wireless data is expected to be a big catalyst for revenue and growth in the wireless industry.

Qualcomm's BREW has been in a heated competition for market share with Sun Microsystems' Java platform called J2ME.

KT Freetel's decision also comes as South Korea's government has expressed support for a third technology called Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability.

San Diego-based Qualcomm did not disclose the details of the contract.
