Punjab to set up Knowledge City in Mohali

NEW DELHI: The Punjab Government plans to set up a ‘Knowledge City’ at Mohali.

The government has already allocated 330 acres of land for setting up the Knowledge City, which will house four major institutes.

Ramesh Inder Singh, chief secretary, Government of Punjab, said that Mohali will house Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), National Institute of Nano-Technology (NINT) and National Institute of Bio-Technology (NIBT).

“The IISER has already started working from a temporary campus till the campus is ready. Regarding the Nano-Technology and the Bio-Technology Institutes we are awaiting the cabinet approval,” Singh said.

The government is also betting big on setting up Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the State.

According to government officials the institute would be set up under public-private partnership.

“Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal in a recent meeting with some of the corporates in Delhi had offered them to set up educational institutes in the State. The chief minister had suggested offering free land with 60 per cent of capital. We have also offered to bear 60 per cent of the recurring deposit for setting up such institutes. We are planning to set up 117 such schools within a year,” Singh said.

The government is also initiating to introduce science and mathematics learning in various government schools, since 40 per cent of the Blocks in the State had stopped teaching the science subjects and students were opting for arts subjects.
