NEW DELHI: The Asian Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) has
conferred the 'ASOCIO 2001' IT award on Pramod Mahajan, minister of Information
Technology, Telecommunications and Parliamentary Affairs, for his pioneering
role in the development of the IT industry.
Harres Tan, chairman, ASOCIO, presented the award at the event hosted by
Nasscom.
Speaking on the occasion Mahajan said, "I'm taking this award on behalf
of all those people who have made India an IT superpower."
Harres Tan said that Mahajan had taken strategic initiatives to catalyze the
growth of the IT industry in India. He initiated innovative projects such as
Media Lab Asia to deliver the benefits of IT to the masses, and worked closely
with the industry to create IT-friendly policies like the IT act and Convergence
Bill. "His efforts have resulted in IT being accorded a national level
status and have also placed India firmly on the global IT map," said Tan.
The ASOCIO IT award is presented to a leading industry or government
personality in the host country. ASOCIO has 17 member countries as of now.
