NEW YORK, USA: Passive optical networking (PON) is now established as the leading technology for high-speed broadband access, with worldwide sales of GPON equipment alone expected to reach $4.7 billion by 2011, according to the latest edition of Light Reading's Components Insider, a paid research service of TechWeb's Light Reading.

PON Components User Survey: 2008 Market Trends, a 15-page report in PDF format, analyzes current and projected use of PON components by systems vendors. It is based on the results of an exclusive, worldwide survey of engineers, designers, and product managers who work for telecom and networking system equipment manufacturers. Their responses make it clear that PON components from a wide range of companies are used to develop systems.

The survey goes beyond gauging the depth and breadth of PON component usage to include insights into how customers view vendors. The report includes a breakdown of the various PON technologies, including 10-Gbit/s PON, and the vendors that service providers are using for OLT controllers, ONT/ONU controllers, transceiver devices, and optical components. Respondents were also asked which factors were most important to them in choosing these components, as well as how they rate each of the leading vendors for ONT/ONU controllers, transceiver devices, and optical components.
