Polycom brings real presence to India

NEW DELHI: Polycom Inc. is all set to introduce ‘real presence’ for the Indian corporate customers.

In an exclusive interaction with CyberMedia News, Yugal Sharma, country manager, India and SAARC, Polycom said that the company is coming up with a demo center for ‘real presence’ in Noida.

“This will be the first-of-its-kind demo center to experience the technology of real presence. We are planning to launch the center next week,” Sharma said.

A provider of unified collaborative communications Polycom offers unified collaborative communications (UCC), integrating video, voice, data and Web solutions for enterprise corporate customers.

Speaking about the competition, Sharma said that the product and solutions of real presence is different from telepresence. “While other telepresence solutions feature multiple 16:9 displays that appear as letterbox 'windows' into another room, Polycom solutions feature large, integrated, and contoured video walls (eight feet or 16 feet wide) with seamless transitions,” explained Sharma.

According to a Frost and Sullivan survey, the telepresence market was at an estimated $9.5 million in 2006, with a forecast to grow at 59.6 per cent CAGR. The market is expected to be worth $250.8 million by end of 2013.

The company is investing $1 million for the demo center. Sharma said that the demo center will be the experience hub for the customers.

“Real presence is a term use to signify the real and live experience, which has been missing in telepresence till now. Another unique feature is the Polycom RPX HD, which offers the ability to send and receive all types of multimedia content in high resolution, and simultaneously sending both that content and video of the people in the room, making it feel real live experience,” Sharma added.

Commenting on reducing the cost, Sharma said that the Income Tax department had installed a telepresence connecting the major branch offices across the country, which proved beneficial for the department in cutting down costs.

“Once installed the system, the top official could convene the annual meeting of the Income Tax officials through telepresence, which helped them to cut down the cost and expenditure of the annual meeting in the national capital,” Sharma added.
